All About Solana Beach

Solana Beach, California, stretches back to the pre-Columbian era when bands of Native Americans lived along the coast. They spent their time fishing the lagoons and gathering seeds. In 1769 the Spanish arrived and eventually built missions to explore the surrounding region.

When Mexico won its independence from Spain in 1821, the area went under Mexico’s ownership. Most of the residents in the area at that time were descendants of Spanish settlers who were politically active and had large ranchos. Thousands of San Diego County acres became privately owned during the Mexican regime.

A dramatic turn in history occurred after the Mexican American War of 1846, and California became a U.S. territory two years later.

Settlers began to arrive in Solana Beach during the late nineteenth century. During this period, the land was full of avocado groves and fields of lima beans.

The railroad construction made it easier for increasing numbers of people to settle in the region. Most of these people were ranchers and farmers. As more and more people came, the need for homes on smaller plots of land grew.

Solana Beach’s population boomed before and after WWII. This growth fostered the building of schools, community centers, and commercial buildings to house shops and restaurants.

Living and Working in Solana Beach

Unlike neighboring areas, Solana Beach has retained its quiet, small-town charm. It may not boast the vibrant nightlife that other towns of the region do, but it is famous for its postcard-worthy beaches and art scene.

Today, Solana Beach is famous for its art galleries, antique shops, trendy eateries, and eclectic boutiques. This suburb of San Diego is home to about 13,000 residents and has a welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere.

Annie’s Canyon Trail Near Beach Orthodontics

Do you want to get out in the wild for a breath of fresh air after your Beach Orthodontics appointment? If so, head to Annie’s Canyon Trail, less than a two-mile drive Northward. See panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and the San Elijo Lagoon.

Annie’s Canyon Trail is a short but wondrous slot canyon trail tucked into the bluffs on a stretch of the lagoon near San Diego’s Solana Beach hamlet. The locals know the area as the Mushroom Caves with naturally eroding sandstone walls. The unique slot formations were created from being underwater millions of years ago.

The canyon portion squeezes through a narrow passage between sandstone walls, only wide enough for one person at a time. The walk culminates in a steep section near the top of a bluff that requires climbing a short metal ladder. The views on the bluff are spectacular and not to be missed.

Take advantage of a truly magical visit to Annie’s Canyon Trail!
